TACTICAL SOLUTIONS DEFEATING CRIME AT THE ATM
Organized criminals who target ATMs cost the industry billions of dollars every year. Reported ATM crime is up over 27%, with physical attacks up for the fourth consecutive year. ATMs can be compromised by criminals from very simple tools to more destructive methods, such as ram-raids and explosives. Many of these crimes go unnoticed in the moment because the ATM user mistakes the fraudulent transaction as a failed one and moves on to a different machine.
COMMON ATM CRIMES
Criminals are using a variety of skimming devices to gather and harvest customer data. These are inserted deeply into the ATM card reader which make them virtually undetectable by the general public. When a card is inserted into the ATM, the skimming device gathers the information and sends it electronically to the criminals. They will also hide pinhole cameras near the machine to capture the victims’ pin numbers. The cash is dispensed, and the customer has no idea their card details and PIN have just been stolen.
Additional common methods used by criminals are card entrapment devices – from flap traps, spring traps and loop traps. Nearly impossible to spot by the untrained eye, these devices are inserted into the cash machine’s card reader and retain the card inside the machine. After the cardholder gives up and leaves, the criminal removes the device with the card.
Black box and jackpotting are another common threat used by criminals as they cut into the ATM and attach electronic devices which then commands the ATM to dispense cash. The attack can empty the contents of the machine in just a few minutes.
Reversal fraud transactions are also growing – the criminals block access to the case being dispensed, but trap it from being returned to the ATM. Once the customer leaves thinking the machine has failed the criminals move in to retrieve the stolen cash and the banks record the incident as a reversed transaction.
Physical attacks on ATMs have risen over the last few years. These attacks result in extensive collateral damage, as well as stolen cash, and criminals will often use stolen equipment to carry out these attacks. Physical attacks include smash and grab, ram raids, and explosive attacks. Explosive attacks from gas and solid explosives not only result in extensive collateral damage but can pose a risk to life.
